Record turnout for car show
A record 166 vehicles motored into the Renfrew Fairgrounds Saturday for the Summer's End Car Show for Dad.
Organizer Ray Beimers was delighted with the turnout and the warm sunshine that had the participants and the many visitors smiling.
There were also motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles bicycles and even a tank on display at the fifth annual event.
The car show promotes awareness and raises money for the battle against prostate cancer: Cancer products were sold at the event, raising $234 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
In the spirit of the day, 50/50 draw winner Dave Recoski of Dave's Automotive donated his winnings to the cause.
The event conincides with the end of summer and Prostate Cancer Awareness Week in Canada.
Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer for men as 22,300 Canadians were diagnosed with the disease in 2007, with 4,300 resulting in death.
Prostate Cancer Support Groups (PCSG) are available for men and their significant others to speak to other patients about their experiences, as the illness can drastically alter a man's life physically, mentally and emotionally.
While this can result in significatnt impacts on self image and relationships with family and friends, many men say PCSGs give a sense of hope and reassurance they are not alone.
Prostat cancer survivor and CJOH-TV new anchor Max Keeping dropped by to give out awards and share some inspirational words about fighting the disease. The key is early detection, he stressed.
