Nathan Blok Moves To Open Wheel Racing, Acquires F1600 License
Beachburg’s Nathan Blok has done it again, surpassing another milestone in his quest to race cars professionally.
Following a June 19 test session at the Sanaire race track in Montreal, the local teen and Fellowes High School student came away with a Formula Ford (F1600) license issued by the Fédération de Sport Automobile du Québec (FSAQ).
“Having this license will provide me with opportunities to get practice in open wheel racing which is what I have been dreaming about from day one,” said Blok, whose ultimate aspiration is to compete in Formula One.
And some of that practice time has already taken place at the Calabogie Motorsport Park where he has been training with Claude Bourbonnais,
one of Canada's most experienced professional race car drivers who has raced internationally in series such as the Indianapolis 500, the Le Mans and FIA Formula F3000.
Bourbonnais has more than 10 years of experience working with leading racing schools and advanced driving programs. He was spokesperson for the Molson Canadian "Don't Drink and Drive" program along with Mario Andretti and conducted stunts for the Sylvester Stallone film "Driven".
In addition, Blok has joined the Ottawa-based Mortimer Racing Team, the largest race team in Canada and winner of the 2007 Overall and the Diamond Championship, as well as the 2008 A and B Class championships in the Ontario Formula Ford Challenge.
Excited about his first race to be run at Calabogie as part of the Ted Powell Memorial Race Weekend July 25-26, Blok is also hoping sponsorship funding will be available so that he can attend the NASCAR Canadian Tire NAPA Autoparts 200 weekend at the F1 circuit in Montreal the weekend of Aug. 29.
“To be able to race on the F1 circuit as part of the same event which will see some of NASCARS top names on the track would be more than I could have imagined a year ago,” Blok said.
"But as everyone knows, car racing is a very expensive sport, so I am so appreciative of my sponsors who have got me to where I am today and I can only hope that I can bring them solid results.”
“I also would love to be able to welcome on board new sponsors who can join me on my journey – it’s already turning out to be quite an adventure and I can’t wait to see what is around the next bend,” Blok said.
