Local Student earns awards at county-wide science fair
The Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair is the place to see the innovation of Renfrew County students and this year's event did not disappoint. Projects touched all aspects of life, physical, health and engineering sciences.
More than $10,000 in awards and scholarships were given out to students across the County in recognition of their ideas and study.
Nathan Blok, a well-known go-kart competitor and enthusiast, entered a project entitled The Need for Speed.
“I wanted to find a way of reducing the drag on my go-kart”, said the young racer. Using different textures on bars, he was surprised by his results. It's not what I expected.” The 13-year old expected a dimpled bar to give him the best results and it didn't.
Before going home Saturday, Nathan won the Nuclear Research Award, which is sponsored by the Chalk River branch of the Canadian Nuclear Society. This award is presented to projects that display an excellence in nuclear research.
He also received the University of Ontario Institute of Technology award, which recognized projects that demonstrate the most innovative development, adaptation or use of technology in any subject area. And finally, he placed second in the Junior Physical and Mathematical Sciences category.
